Signed American Federal Blockfront Chest, Lexington, Kentucky, area, cherry with poplar secondary wood. Rectangular top with central block front over a conforming case with four graduated dovetailed drawers, having cockbeaded edges and original brass oval pulls and escutcheons. Horizontal line inlaid base atop four reeded tapering feet. Paneled sides. Back with chalk inscription "_Roberts / Springfield _". 39 1/2"H x 40 1/2"W x 21 3/4"D. First quarter of the 19th century.
PROVENANCE: Provenance: Private Southern collection, acquired at Case Auctions in 2015 from the estate of Bertha Cochran Wright, ex-Calumet Farm, Lexington, KY (lot 163).
CONDITION: Top with filled crack, fading, and scattered stains and abrasions, 2" patch upper rear right side. Some damage to front of interior drawer bottom. Areas of surface lightening to third drawer front. Shrinkage and surface fading throughout. Several veneer patches and losses to stiles. Later finish. Drawer supports replaced.
