George III English Chinoiserie enameled long case clock by Thomas Butterfield. The clock has an eight-day, two-train striking movement and is contained in a lacquered teal green and gilt case decorated with Chinoiserie figural landscape decoration. The domed pediment is fitted with gilt balled finials. The arched dial has a silver-applied chapter ring with gilt foliate corner spandrels. The matted center of the dial contains an aperture to view the day of the month and a Seconds dial. Makerâs signature and address engraved on a plaque at the top. 98" H x 19 1/2" W x 10" D. Last quarter 18th century. Note: Thomas Butterfield is recorded in the book Britain's Old Clocks And Watches (1954) as the maker of a similar Parliament Clock, circa 1790, which also is contained in a Japanned case.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Pia Stratton, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: The clock case is in very good condition with age-related separation cracks to the wood panels, some abrasions and losses, and some restoration to the paint decoration, visible under UV light inspection. The movement has been previously restored, all parts present, functionality not checked or guaranteed. Later paint decoration on the clock, probably early 20th century.
