Pennsylvania German, possibly Heidelberg Township/Berks County or Lancaster County. Painted lift-top blanket chest, pine, poplar, and possibly other softwoods. Comprised of an overhanging molded top with breadboard ends, dovetailed case with polychrome painted and stenciled tulips and geometric floral designs and simulated barber pole inlay on a red painted ground; base molding along three sides, case supported by four turned legs. Interior with iron strap hinges and original engraved iron crab lock with key. Interior well has lift-top till at upper left. 24 1/2" H x 49 1/2" W x 23" D. American, late 18th century. Note: Old clipping of similar decorated chest taped to the underside of the lid. Provenance: Private Sevier County, TN collection. CONDITION: Overall wear to paint colors, especially on top. Some surface wear. Losses to bottom of feet. Examined with black light and no inpainting or alterations visible.
