Middle Tennessee Federal secretary bookcase cabinet in two sections, walnut primary and poplar secondary. Upper section: Flat top with overhanging molded covetto cornice over two cabinet doors with light wood banding, inlaid diamond wood escutcheon and lock interior with three fixed shelves. Lower section: Hinged slant-lid opens to reveal a fitted interior with four short drawers over 8 scalloped pigeonhole compartments divided by a central hinged and locking cabinet door, interior door and drawers finished with light wood inlay trim. Four long graduated dovetailed drawers with satin & ebony wood inlaid trim, beaded edges, central brass keyhole escutcheons and brass oval mount bail handle hardware. Back with long overlap edge panels. Lower desk section with scalloped skirt and resting on four French splayed feet. Closed: 81 3/4" H x 43 7/8" w x 21 1/4" D. Open: 81 3/4" H x 43 7/8" w x 36" D. Middle-Tennessee, first quarter 19th century.
PROVENANCE: A Middle Tennessee estate.
CONDITION: Refinished with circular wood fill to near escutcheon 1/4" and wood fill to rail 5 areas 1/4" each. Lower section: Interior desk drawers with some patches, largest 2 1/2" x 1" and one with a replaced drawer bottom. Writing lid with replaced hinges, patches over previous hinged points. Minor repair and restoration to drawer escutcheon. Drawers sides with slight buildup from wear. Each drawer with small filled holes to each corner. Some staining to interior drawers and hardware replaced. Possible restoration to foot facings of French feet. Scattered surface abrasions and indentations.
