Pennsylvania sponge painted pine dower chest. Comprised of a lift top with breadboard ends and iron rattail hinges, exposed dovetailed chest with interior till and two drawers, medial molding over three drawers, carved skirt with central circular cutout and tall shaped bracket feet. Allover blue/green sponge paint decoration with red stenciled potted tulip, heart, comma and fylfot designs to the top, red twin bird, comma and potted tulip designs to the front and red potted tulip designs to the sides. Red painted accents to the molding edges and corners, simulating fans, to each drawer. Iron escutcheon. 32 5/8" H x 50 1/2" W x 24 3/4" D. Late 18th/early 19th century. Provenance: Private Sevier County, TN collection. CONDITION: Overall general wear. Lock missing, hole in top where original hardware mounted. Losses to medial molding and lower section of center drawer facing. Examined with black light and no inpainting or alterations visible.
