Victorian Gothic Revival style sterling silver presentation mug, marks for London, sterling, 1866-1867, maker's mark for Robert Hennell II. Also includes an additional crossed swords mark and incised words "Elkington & Co. Liverpool" near handle. Front engraved with a crest of a crane over the words "John J. Crane from R.H. Lowry in Gothic script. (Note: John J. Crane succeeded R.H. Lowry as President of the Bank of Republic in New York in 1863, but continued to serve on the board of directors, according to vol 18 and 22 of The Bankers Magazine, published 1864 and 1868 respectively). Bowl has gilt-washed interior, ridged sides and features a beaded top over two bands of repeating repousse star medallions,separated by engraved crosshatched decoration, bordered by beading. The design repeats on the round foot. Handle also features a beaded design. 5"H, 6.91 oz troy. Provenance: Nashville collection.
