1st item: Antique pocket watch signed J. W. Thomas, Dyersburg, Tenn. on face (attr. Joseph W. Thomas, b. 1865- d.1904), 14k gold filled hunting case marked Dueber on interior with anchor and serpent trademark; engraved scroll decoration to back cover. 2" diameter. Retains original fitted velvet and silk box with leather cover. Circa 1895. Note: Joseph W. Thomas was the son of B.L. Thomas, who, according to Tennessee Silversmiths by Dr. Benjamin H. Caldwell, appeared in the 1860 State Gazetteer under "Jewelry, Watches Clocks Etc." in Dyersburg. Although little information exists about their partnership, Joseph apparently followed his father into business, but his career was cut short by his untimely death. B. (Beverly) L. Thomas (1837-1906) was a Confederate veteran and later mayor of Dyersburg, Tennessee. The Dueber Watch Case Company was established in Cincinnati in the 1860s and later moved to Newport, Ky. It merged with its sister company, Hampden, in 1925. 2nd item: 5 Memphis coin silver teaspoons with fiddle swell tipt handles, 4 marked Merriman & Clark in rectangles, all monogrammed JBMS, the 5th with incuse retailer mark Merriman & Byrd, monogrammed CBM. All 6"L. Caldwell notes that James E. Merriman worked in Memphis 1841-47 with Frederick H. Clark and from 1847-1860 and later on his own and in partnership with others. By 1860 his firm's name was changed to Merriman & Byrd when W.C. Byrd became a partner in the business. Condition: Watch not running at time of inspection, case in overall very good condition. Some wear to exterior and interior of original box. Spoons are in overall good condition with some scattered minor dents to bowls.
