Two (2) English oil on board oval paintings, the subjects presumed to be sisters Ann E. Botry and Catherine Botry, circa 1783. 1st item: Portrait depicting a young brunette woman attired in a pink gown, white skirt, white sash and floral hairpiece, leaning against a table and holding a book in her left hand, and flanked by green drapery against a plain background. Inscribed en verso "Ann E. Botry, 1783" with possible illegible artist signature. 2nd item: Portrait depicting a young brunette woman attired in a green gown, pink sash, white skirt, and floral hairpiece, holding a purse, and leaning against an architectural form in front of a garden landscape. Inscribed "Catherine Botry, 1783" en verso. Both housed in carved giltwood frames with bead course decoration. Sights: 11 3/4" H x 9 1/3" W. Frames: 14 1/4" H x 12" W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Raymond White, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: 1st item: Craquelure throughout with some minor scratches, largest 1/2", and very minor scattered inpainting in lower margin. Significant losses to gilt and carving on frame. Painting is loose in frame. 2nd item: Craquelure throughout, with some minute losses and scratching, largest scratch 1" L. Significant area of overpainting on lower quadrant, see UV light photos for reference, approximately 3.5" dia., and minor scattered inpainting visible under UV light inspection, largest area 1/4" dia. to the right of subject's face in the portrait of Catherine Botry. Significant losses to gilt and carving on frame. Painting is loose in frame; frames may not be original.
