1st item: 19th century French lace fan having a hand-painted scene of two lovers to the center with silver paint and mother of pearl accents. 9 1/2" L. 2nd-3rd items: Two (2) pairs of 19th-century French opera glasses, including one (1) mother of pearl and brass pair marked "Lemaire Paris" and engraved "Flora 1890", and one (1) black and leather pair also marked "Lemaire Paris". 2 1/2" H x 3 3/4" W and 3 1/8" H x 4" W. 4th item: French bronze carriage clock, the works on top marked SFRA and marked along the lower edge of the works MADE IN FRANCE. Retains the original winding key. 4 1/4" H x 3 1/8" W x 2 1/2" D. 19th century. 5th item: Rectangular tortoiseshell box with silver inlay. 3" H x 2" W. European, 19th century. 6th item: French mother of pearl letter opener with figural brass Napoleon handle. 5 3/4" L. 19th century. 7th item: Engraved brass tobacco box with hinged lid and bottom depicting figures, animals, and illegible script; and copper sides depicting animals running through a landscape. 1 3/8" H x 6 1/8" W x 1 7/8" D. European, 19th century. 8th item: Carved scrimshaw sperm whale tooth with an engraved three-masted ship carved to one side. 5" H. 19th century. Provenance: The collection of Gary Glesser of Loudon, Tennessee, by descent from his grandparents, Captain Hoyt and Rachel Holton of Toledo, Ohio. Hoyt Holton became, at age 17, the youngest captain of a Great Lakes Freighter. In the 1960s, Captain Holton participated in a 26-day Admiral Byrd Society trip replicating the explorer's famous transpolar expedition, during which he met the Pope and Soviet Premier Nikita Kruschev. Many items in the collection were brought back as souvenirs from that journey and other frequent voyages.

CONDITION: 1-7th items: All in overall good condition with general wear. One end of fan lace not attached to ivory stay. Leather opera glasses with tears and losses to leather. Tortoiseshell case with missing silver cartouche inlay. Carriage clock with oxidation. Tobacco box with minor scattered surface pitting and some discoloration. 8th item: Overall good condition with old patina, a couple of fissures noted one emanating from the base approx. 1 1/2" L and one to tip, approx. 3/4"L.
