Helen LaFrance (American/Kentucky, 1919-2020) oil on canvas horizontally oriented painting depicting an African landscape with a herd of zebras on a grassy plain and trees with verdant foliage in the foreground, set against a tan backdrop with bright orange paint along the horizon line, indicating a sunrise or sunset. Signed "Helen La France" lower right. Unframed. 19 1/2" H x 34" W. Biography: "Self-taught African American artist Helen LaFrance was born on a Kentucky farm and began painting in her 40s. She is known for her "memory paintings"-drawn from her recollections of life growing up in the rural South. Several museums and private collectors, including Oprah Winfrey, own examples of her work." CONDITION: Painting has duct tape residue around the perimeter edge on all four sides. There are a few scratches, largest 5" L. Otherwise in good condition.
