Ted Jones (Tennessee, b. 1938) carved wooden sculpture depicting a kneeling bearded gilded winged figure with cross on chest. Carved signature and date of 2004 on base, front left. 22-3/4" H x 26-1/2" D x 11-1/2" W at base. Biography (Courtesy Tennessee State University): Ted Jones, painter, printmaker, sculptor, and photographer taught for over 34 years at Tennessee State University. He was also a Professor of Art at Fisk University, and now serves as Adjunct Professor in the Art Department. A native of New Orleans, he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Xavier University. He completed graduate studies in Art at Michigan State University (M.A.), and the University of Montana (M.F.A.) His works have been exhibited nationally. Inspired by the African-American human experience, he is also moved by themes from the Old and New Testaments from the Holy Bible. His work has transitioned from racial issues to religious subjects. Professor Jones is strongly influenced by many artists including Henry Ossawa Tanner, Aaron Douglas, and Jacob Lawrence. CONDITION: Some scattered surface abrasions mostly to front top of head and dark base area.
