Guiseppe Bessi (Italy, 1857-1922) marble full-length sculpture of a figure attired in a crown and full habit incised with ornate decoration, walking forward on mosaic pavement holding a book and flowers. Signed "Prof. G. Bessi" on reverse edge of base. 27 1/2" H x 8 1/2" W x 11" D. Italian, Late 19th/early 20th century. Note: This work is probably a depiction of Dante's Alighieri's muse Beatrice Portinari, who the artist often portrayed.
PROVENANCE: The Collection of Griff and Dallas Adams, Johnson City, Tennessee. Property descending from the collection of TN Supreme Court Justice Thaddeus Cox and Pearl Cox, originally housed in "The Oaks", Johnson City, TN.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Some light separations and wear to base, one area of repair on base at the front left corner, approximately 2".
