English School, 18th century, portrait of gentleman, facing left, wearing powdered wig, blue waistcoat with gold trim and gold buttons, white ruffled shirt, hat folded under left arm, blue sky and clouds in background. Unsigned. Two older paper labels en verso, one dated March 10th, 1885: "Michael Biddulph Esq. M.P., 3/4 Portrait of a Gentleman in a blue dress, with hat under his arm, (temp. George 3rd)" suggesting the portrait may have belonged to 1st Baron Biddulph of Ledbury, a Member of Parliament from 1865-1886 for Hereford and then South Herefordshire. Sight – 28-1/8" H x 23-1/8" W, Gilt cove molded frame – 33-1/2" H x 28-1/2" W. English, 18th century. Provenance: Private Knoxville, TN estate. CONDITION: Moderate to heavy craquelure overall with significant areas of cleavage, flaking, and loss in lower right corner, right shoulder of sitter at collar, top of head of sitter, and lower right corner. Minor inpainting to bottom edge and in backround (see blacklight photo). Scrape abrasions to sitter's mouth and chin. Frame abrasions and minor losses on both vertical sides. 1/2" loss at both corners of left side of frame.
