John Rathbone (United Kingdom, 1750-1807) oil on board landscape painting titled "London from Hampstead" depicting a man and a woman on a country road, left, the city of London visible in the background, including the spired dome of St. Paul's Cathedral. Pawsy and Payne, 1 Bury Street, 56 St. James's Square, London gallery label with artist title, and date information "circa 1790" en verso. Housed in a gilt bronze carved wooden frame. Sight – 11 1/2" H x 15 1/4" W. Framed – 15" H x 18 1/2" W. Late 18th century. Provenance: Private Knoxville, TN estate. CONDITION: Moderate cracquelure overall, primarily visible in sky region. 10 1/2" horizontal split in board lower half. Small gap at top left between board and frame. Scuffs and losses with inpainting (8 1/2" L. strip, evident with black light) bottom left corner.
