East Tennessee cherry press, stepped ogee cornice, two part construction with poplar and yellow pine secondary woods, half pilaster turnings on top and base. Top with ogee cornice transitioning to a diagonally reeded frieze, 16 panes with pegged and mortised doors. Press base having two dovetailed drawers over two doors with inset panels and diagonally reeded borders. Relief carving of tombstones to top of stiles on lower section. Turned reeded feet. 99 3/4" H x 47" W x 20" D. Provenance – Descended from the Evelyn Christian estate in Philadelphia, TN (Loudon Co). The press has a history being owned by Dr. Pennington of the Sweetwater/Philadelphia area and a hand tinted photographic portrait on paper of Dr. Pennington is included with the lot. Circa 1830.
