American school, late 18th century, oil on canvas oval portrait depicting a young Revoluntionary War officer attired in a powdered wig and blue officer's dress coat. Unsigned. Verso with two taped labels, "Montgomery", possibly Montgomery family of Baltimore. Housed in a later carved gilt oval frame with scrolling floral vine molding. Sight – 11 1/4" H x 9 1/4" W. Framed – 17 1/2" H x 15 1/2" W. Provenance: Baltimore estates of Virginia Howard Miller (c. 1880-1946), descendant of artist Alfred Jaob Miller (Baltimore 1810-1874) and Hugh Purviance King (1873-1966) passed down to present Living Estate of Virginia Johnston, Chattanooga, TN. CONDITION: Canvas has been reduced and mounted on newer stretchers. Slight craquelure overall with 2 minor dents in bottom center. Frame with gilt touch ups. Minor scattered inpainting mainly to background (see black light). Back with Chattanooga, TN frame and restoration shop label.
