Rare Blount Co., Tennessee pottery jug stamped on back lower base, "Maryville Pottery" and an additional stamp of "1/2" on upper shoulder. Pulled handle and tapered rim with incised rings, base with tapered edge. Appears to be a stoneware/redware transitional piece with buff orange color. 9 1/8" H. Late 19th century. Note – Sam Smith and Stephen Rogers reference the Maryville pottery in Volume 1 of "Tennessee Potteries, Pots, and Potters, 1790s-1950" and list potters WIlliam Grindstaff, B. A. Lawson, and D. L. Smith working briefly at this site, 1870s – 1898 (p. 92). Condition: Condition – overall very good condition with minor chips to rim edge, couple of base separations that are probably from the firing process.
