Rembrandt Van Rin (Netherlands, 1606-1669) copperplate etching, drypoint, and burin on ivory laid paper titled "Jan Lutma, Goldsmith" depicting a seated portrait of Lutma, a well-known figure in Amsterdam society, accompanied by the tools of his trade and holding a candlestick in his right hand. Signed and dated "Rembrandt F, 1656" in plate, upper center. Sitter identified as "Joannes Lutma Aurifecx/ Natus 'Groningre'", in plate, center-right. Inscription en verso dated to 1808, similar to Lugt 3006 (J.T. Badel Nijenhuis who lived from 1797 to 1872, and was a collector of 17th-century art). Supplemental material with reference information – State II/III and Certificate of Authenticity from the Galleria M. Arte Padova, Italy. Hind # 290. Mounted and housed in a giltwood frame under glass. Plate: 7 1/8" H x 5 3/4" W. Framed: 18 1/2" H x 16 1/2" W. Note: This work was purchased from the Galleria M. Arte in Padova, Italy in 1998. CONDITION: Overall good condition with some light creasing to paper. Frame with light wear and some gilt loss to corners, approximately 1" lower left. Examine and photographed outside of frame. Upper margin is adhered to a backing, see photos 11 & 12 for reference.
