John Adams Spelman (Minnesota/Illinois, 1880-1941) oil on canvas landscape painting titled "The Old Mountain Home Near Big Smokey Mountains" depicting a cabin on a small hill surrounded by trees, a small pond and trees in the foreground, mountain range in the background, below a blue sky dotted with small clouds. Signed and dated "J' A' Spelman 24" lower left. Housed in a molded giltwood frame with rounded corners. Sight – 23 1/2" H x 26 1/2" W. Framed – 28 1/4" H x 31 1/4" W. American, early 20th century. Biography: Minnesota born artist John Spelman studied at the Art Institute of Chicago under John H. Vanderpoel and Charles F. Browne and was known for his Minnesota and Great Lakes area landscapes. He also spent time in the South painting the mountains around Gatlinburg and Asheville, North Carolina with Chicago painter Rudolph Ingerle, with whom he shared a similar style. CONDITION: Overall good condition with few areas of craquelure.
