Joseph Wopfner (Austria, 1843-1927) oil on canvas (laid down on board) landscape painting titled "Vierwaldstadter See in Abendlicht" or "Lake Lucerne in Evening Light" depicting an Alpine scene with trees in the foreground, Lake Lucerne in the center with a boat floating in the water, and mountain terrain in the background under a cloudy blue sky. Signed and dated "J. W. P , 1910" lower right. Housed in a giltwood Louis XIV style frame. Sight: 11" H x 14 1/4" W, Framed: 20" H x 23" W. Note: This work is featured in Josef Wopfner's Catalogue Raisonne by Irmgard Holz and Alexander Rauch, Figure 551, page 235. Biographical Note: Josef Wopfner is celebrated for his paintings of the Bavarian regions of the Oberland and the Chiemsee, both popular destinations for Munich-based painters like Wopfner. In their moods, Wopfner's landscapes are often meditative and Wopfner himself wanted to be known as a "Holy Painter." His work borders on impressionism in his loose application of paint and gestural brushwork, and many of his paintings are based on drawings made en plein air. Source: Adapted from Holz, Irmgard and Alexander Rauch, JOSEF WOPFNER 1843-1927 (Rosenheimer Verlagshau, 1989).
