Alfred Augustus Glendening, Sr. (England, c. 1840-1910) oil on canvas harvest landscape, “Noonday Rest,” 1870. Two seated figures rest before a shock of hay while a third, standing figure holds a bucket and looks out over an expansive pastoral vista and the ocean beyond. Two men cut hay in the middleground and and a jug lies in the foreground grass. Signed and dated lower left. With Brodie and Middleton, London label affixed to stretcher along with typed “F G 35” inventory label and smaller, handwritten label with artist’s name and dimensions plus “735.” Inscribed “AA Glendening” en verso. Housed in a molded giltwood frame with nameplate. Sight: 23 1/2 in H x 35 1/2 in. W. Framed: 31 in. H x 43 1/4 in. W.
PROVENANCE: Private collection, Chicago.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Canvas has been lined. Minor abrasion with 1/8 inch x 1/8 inch area of loss and related 1 inch x 1/4 inch area of retouching to foliage at lower left. Also with a few localized points of retouch and additional retouching to craquelure throughout. See UV photography. Frame with negligible abrasions and losses.
