Oil on canvas painting of a fighting rooster or gamecock in a landscape. A cock with a trimmed tail and spurs on each leg stands before a tree-filled vista with a stream and distant ocean. Several points of white on the ocean suggest faraway ships. Unsigned. Housed in a giltwood frame. Sight: 23 in. H x 19 in W. Canvas: 24 in. H x 20 in. W. Framed: 28 7/8 in. H x 24 7/8 in. W. 18th or early 19th century. Note: The present painting was sold by Christie’s in 1983 and is listed in the sale catalog as signed by James Berenger I (English, 1745-1813) or II (English, 1780-1831) and dated 1805. We have not located this signature and date, however varnish has obscured some passages of the painting
CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Canvas has been lined. With minor, scattered retouching throughout, especially to craquelure in cock’s white feathers and to sky, largest area to sky at upper right, 8 inch x 5 inch. See U/V photography. Frame with minor abrasions and losses.
