Manner of Gerrit Dou (Dutch, 1616-1675 ) oil of canvas painting depicting a young man wearing a vibrant red cap while practicing the flute. A sunset or sunrise is visible through the portal behind him while a tangle of vegetation occupies the space in the composition's upper left. Housed in a new, custom molded giltwood frame. Sight: 15" H x 10" W. Framed: 19 1/4" H x 15" W. 18th C. or earlier. Note: Dou was among Rembrandt's most successful students and one of the best known of the 17th-century Dutch fijnschilders, or fine-painters, famed for their nearly microscopic attention to detail. Dou is especially celebrated for his window-niche scenes, like this painting.
PROVENANCE: Private Illinois Collection.
CONDITION: Canvas laid down on board. Two 1/4" indentations near the sight edge at center-left and scattered spots of flaking, largest 1/2" on the basket held by the putti sculptures below the window sill. Faint craquelure throughout.
