Emily Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi, 1890 – 1980), "Moss Hung Oaks, Mississippi," large oil on canvas painting depicting two figures in small boats rowing toward sailboats on a placid body of water, framed by arched, mossy branches of live oak trees. Shrubby fauna and flora grow in the sandy foreground and billowy pink-tinged clouds accumulate on the horizon. Signed "Marie A. Hull" lower right and also signed, with artist's Jackson, Mississippi address, en verso. Hand carved parcel gilt frame with red undertones. Sight – 35" W x 29" H. Frame – 43" W x 37" H.
Biography: Marie Hull studied at the Pennsylvania Academy and at Colorado Springs Fine Art Center with Robert Reid and John F. Carlson. In 1922, she enrolled at the Art Students League where her teachers were Frank Vincent Dumond and Robert Vonnoh. She traveled extensively including in Europe under the tutelage of George Elmer Browne, but she is best remembered for her paintings of her native Mississippi where she also taught, including at Hillman College. Hull exhibited at numerous venues including The Art Institute of Chicago; American Watercolor Society; Butler Art Institute, Youngstown, Ohio; Ringling Museum, Sarasota, Florida; Southeastern Annuals, Atlanta; Delta Annuals, Memphis; All-American National Shows, New York City; Autumn Salon, Paris; New York World's Fair (1939) and the San Francisco Golden Gate Exposition (1939). A major exhibition of her work was held at the Mississippi Museum of Art in 2000. PROVENANCE: Private Middle Tennessee Collection. Consignor's mother in law acquired this painting directly from the artist.
CONDITION: Painting in overall good condition with craquelure throughout and a few scattered tiny inclusions. UV light inspection reveals a few scattered minor touch ups including largest center right, between trees, 3/8" Dia. Frame appears original, with even surface wear to gilt and some very minor scattered surface losses.
