Kinley Shogren (American, 1924-1991), two realist watercolor on board paintings of mid 20th century industrial scenes, both matted and framed under glass in narrow molded gilt frames. The first painting depicts the US Merchant Ship Samuel Mather docked, likely in Lorain, Ohio, as shipping freight is unloaded. Signed lower right. Sight: 14 in. H. 21 in. W. Frame: 17 1/2 in. H x 24 1/2 in. W. The second depicts a bustling coal mining industrial complex, also likely in Ohio. Signed lower right. Sight: 13 1/2 in. H x 19 1/2 in. W. Frame: 18 in. H x 23 1/2 in. W. Biography: Kinley Shogren was known for his realistic and detailed watercolor depictions of landscapes and industry in North Central Ohio, and maritime scenes. After being wounded in World War II at the Battle of the Bulge, he gave up a planned career in athletics and studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art from 1946-1949. He worked worked as a commercial artist in Cleveland before leaving to paint on his own. Shogren made it his mission to preserve the area’s history by creating an accurate and detailed artistic record. He had a special fondness for painting ships, and also painted in Maine and Mystic, Connecticut. His work was the subject of a one-man retrospective exhibit at the Mansfield Art Center in 1990. CONDITION: Both in overall good condition with light toning to paper and some light toning and foxing to mats. Frames with slight wear.
