Bernard Gussow (New York/New Jersey/Russian Federation, 1881-1957), “The Conductor,” oil on board modernist painting depicting a conductor surrounded by various figures that appear to be both part of an orchestra and partly from the conductor’s imagination in a surrealist composition. Signed “Gussow” lower left. Simple painted wood frame. Sight: 35 1/2 in. H x 47 1/2 in. W. Frame: 41 in. H x 53 in. W. Biography: Painter and lithographer Bernard Gussow was born in Russia and emigrated to the U.S. His training included classes at the Art Students League, the National Academy of Design, and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. From 1912, he was a teacher at the Newark, New Jersey School of Fine and Industrial Art, and he was active in the New York modernist artist scene, exhibiting at the landmark Armory Show of 1913 and with the Society of Independent Artists.
