French Sevres porcelain palace size bronze mounted urn; the cobalt ground decorated with hand-painted vignettes to each side, and enameled gilt highlights throughout. Underside of lid with monogram E within blue interlaced L's and and inscribed in French "offered by the Duke of Richelieu to the Princess of Lamballe" (Offert par le due de Richelieu a la princesse de lamballe). One vignette is signed "Bertien" at the lower edge, and depicts a man with lute serenading two seated young ladies in a landscape setting; the other depicts a landscape setting with trees in the foreground and mountains in the background. Elaborate gilt bronze wreath and swag handles with gilt bronze mounts, gilt bronze-shaped plinth base. Lid with gilt bronze pineapple finial. 43" H x 17" W. French, 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Margaret Harold Roberts, Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
CONDITION: Lid with old repaired breaks to rim. Possible restoration to neck of urn to one side. Paint restoration to left-hand reverse side of urn, visible under UV light inspection. Some light craquelure to both vignettes, scattered losses to clear glaze on cobalt ground.
