Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669) etching, "Old Man With Divided Fur Cap," depicting a bust-length portrait of an unidentified man with a bushy beard and distinctive hat. Signed "Rembrandt f[ecit] 1640" in plate, upper right. On laid paper with partial watermark. White and Boon state two of three. Housed in a green and gilt wood frame with wide white mat. Ferdinand Roten Gallery, Baltimore, MD, label en verso. Plate: 5 5/16" W x 6" H. Frame: 19" H x 15 1/2" W. Ref: Bartsch, Hollstein 265; Hind 170; New Hollstein 182.
CONDITION: Condition is good but commensurate with age, with some foxing throughout. Trimmed to plate mark. Crisp details and dynamic contrasts are preserved. Three acid burns partially hidden by mat are visible along lower marginal line (left, center, and right) as a result of tape applied to verso in the past, now removed. Etching has been examined outside of frame and is hinged along top edge with archival tape.
