Alfred J. Pounders (American, b. 1931) oil on canvas Expressionist landscape painting titled "Morning Forest" depicting a forest in shades of yellow, black, blue, white, and green. Signed and dated "A. Pounders '59" lower right. Exhibition label en verso: Mid-South First Prize Winners, Brooks Memorial Art Gallery, Overton Park, Memphis, Tennessee. Housed in a gilt and black painted wooden frame. Sight – 50" H x 62" W. Framed – 51 1/4" H x 63 1/2" W. Mid 20th century. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. Biography: Al Pounders received his BFA from University of Buffalo, Buffalo, NY in 1956 and his MFA from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY IN 1959. He was Professor Emeritus of Painting, Purdue University West Lafayette, IN. His work has been included in numerous exhibitions including "Umbria from the Eye of Al Pounders" solo exhibition at the Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute, IN in 2008 and "Al Pounders: Recent Work" solo exhibition at the Allan Stone Gallery, New York, NY in 2007. Note: the first annual Mid-South Exhibition was held at the Brooks in 1956, a tradition that continued for the next 17 years and included purchase prizes to help bring regional art into the collection. Jurors included artists such as Wil Barnet and Jack Levine as well as museum directors from institutions such as Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and The Walker Art Center. CONDITION: Overall very good condition.
