American school oil on canvasboard painting, possibly with a hand-colored photographic image of a boy. The boy sits on plank set within a painted landscape and holds a homemade fishing rod while an open can of bait sits beside him. He wears a wide-brimmed hat on his head and a pleased smirk on his face as he watches his line. Titled "The Truant" en verso. Unsigned. Housed in an ornate gilt wood and gesso frame. Board: 17 1/4" H x 13 1/4" W. Frame: 27 1/4" H x 23 1/4" W. Late 19th / early 20th century. Note: It appears that the image of the boy has been printed onto the canvas board and hand colored while the remainder of the composition was painted around the primary subject.
CONDITION: Overall good condition with minor paint loss along edge and on boy's shirt. Frame with some repair; exhibits small areas of loss at the corners
