1st item: Attributed to Cornelis van Dalen I (Netherlands, 1602-1665), drawing of the head of an old man in black and white chalk on gray laid paper with partial watermark, upper right. Inscribed on verso is "aus nachlass Bergers/ xxx Likerpal/ von Dalen fec.," with WSK collector's mark of Wilhelm Konig (Vienna, 1880-1955), Austrian economist and banker and collector of drawings and prints. Inscribed on backing board is "Cornelis von Dalen/ geo. Haarlem 1620/ xxx/ Kopf eines baitigen alten M/ Aus dem nachlass Prof. Bergers/ von Prof. Kerpel." With Henri Antoville Art Galleries, New York, gallery sticker affixed to backing along with previous auction catalog description. Housed in a distressed, beaded giltwood frame with off-white mat with French line. Sheet: 5 1/16" H x 4 7/16" W. Frame 8 1/2" H x 7 1/2" W. Note: Wilhelm Konig was a noted collector of old master Italian, 16th and 17th century Dutch and Flemish, and 18th and 19th century German and Austrian drawings, along with the drawings of Egon Schiele and other contemporary Austrian artists. Konig was advised in his collecting by Dr. Alfred Stix, director of the Albertina Museum, Vienna. During the 1920s he sold a large part of his collection to collector Johann Torok.These drawings, perhaps including the present example, then passed through the sales of the Torok collection in New York in 1928 and in 1933. Among them were drawings now in the collection of the Morgan Library and Museum, New York. (Source: Frits Lugt, The Collection Marks of Drawings & Prints, Custodia Foundation) 2nd item: Studies of sheep and a cow attributed to the circle of George Barret, Sr. (Ireland, c. 1730-1784) in pencil and gray wash on laid paper. With Thomas Deans and Company of Florida, London, & Edinburgh gallery label affixed to backing and inscribed "Circle of George Barret, Sr. / Irish School, circa 1770s. Studies of a sheep and a cow / Pencil and grey wash on laid paper." Floated in a distressed giltwood frame with pale green mat and reveal and French lines. Sheet: 8" H x 10 1/4" W. Frame: 16" H x 17 5/8 W".
PROVENANCE: Private Knoxville, Tennessee collection.
CONDITION: 1st item: Drawing is in good condition, commensurate with age, with a diagonal crease running the length of the upper left quadrant and toning throughout. Frame has scattered gilt loss and craquelure throughout. Drawing has been examined out of frame. 2nd item: Sheet is float mounted to backing. Not examined outside of frame.
