William Henry Davis (British,1786/95 – 1865) oil on canvas portrait of a horse and foal in a landscape setting, with two story manor house in the background. Signed lower left " W.H. Davis " and dated 1856. Reeves & Son (London) canvas suppliers stamp en verso. Later molded giltwood frame. Sight – 24 1/2 H x 29 1/2" W. Frame – 29 1/2"H x 34 1/2" W.
PROVENANCE: Private Nashville, Tennessee collection.
CONDITION: Craquelure and grime throughout; scattered areas up to 1/2" of splattered white paint or other material on the painting's original surface, under the varnish layer. Two 1" areas of repair to ground at lower right. The frame is not original and has multiple areas of scuffs, abrasion, craquelure, and loss.
