1st and 2nd items: 2 cut paper Silhouettes by Beatrix Sherman (American, 1894-1975), each a full length depiction of an older man and woman wearing fashionable clothing (circa 1910). Each is signed "cut by Beatrix Sherman" lower right and measures 15 1/2"H x 6"W overall. Housed under glass in plain black later frames. Condition: each with light toning and foxing, scattered small stains, and some creases (particularly to bottom edges). 3rd and 4th items: Silhouettes of Dr. Joseph C. Strong (b. 1775) and his wife, Catherine Strong of Knoxville. Unsigned. Housed under glass in gilt and ebonized 20th century frames. Both the silhouettes and paper to which they are mounted are in excellent condition, suggesting they may be reproductions of earlier silhouettes. Pencil inscriptions en verso identify the subjects as the great-great-grandparents of Mary Ann Bone (6th generation) and note that Dr. Strong came to Knoxville in 1804. Each, overall – 11" x 8"w. 5 and 6th items: Manner of Karl Diefenbach, two silhouettes set against gilt paper depicting a man and woman making music together, with dogs on the floor, unsigned and framed under glass, 7 3/4" W x 5 1/2" H overall. Circa 1940. 7th item: After Karl Diefenbach, 1 offset print depicting a silhouetted figure playing a flute atop a flower. Unsigned and framed under glass. 7"H x 6"W overall. Circa 1960.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Mary Ann Denney, Nashville, Tennessee.
