Crimean War maritime battle scene painting after Sir Oswald Walters Brierly (English, 1817-1894), "First Trial of Captain Julius Roberts's Mortars against Sebastopol," gouache and watercolor on paper, 2nd half of 19th century. Housed in a later silvered molded frame. Sight: 9" H x 13" W. Frame – 14 1/2" H x 21" W. Note: The hand-lettered title of the scene appears to refer to an illustration with an accompanying article in an account of the battle in "The Illustrated London News" from Sept. 8, 1855, originally painted by Sir Oswald Walters Brierly. However, the image itself more closely aligns with a Brierly image of the battle that appeared in Brierly's "Marine & Coast Sketches of the Black Sea" in 1856.
CONDITION: Light toning and some possible faint dampstaining, particularly visible in sky area. Not examined out of frame. Several small losses to silvering on frame.
