Continental School oil on canvas painting depicting a beautiful woman lying in a garden, her body partially visible through sheer coverings. A dove seeks a landing spot from the air above. Signed “C. Briand” lower right, possible pseudonym for Hans Zatzka (Austria, 1859-1945). Parcel gilt, molded frame. Sight: 16 in. H x 30 in. W. Frame: 22 in. H x 36 in. W. European, late 19th/early 20th century. Note: Viennese painter Hans Zatzka was known for his paintings of sensual female figures, along with more chaste Biblical scenes, church murals, and genre paintings. His wife and daughters often worked as his models. Attribution is difficult as he painted under a variety of different pseudonyms and some of his works were reproduced at the turn of the century.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Anne Buffington, Brentwood, TN.
CONDITION: A small flake to subject’s right hand; craquelure throughout; canvas in need of restretching.
