Italian school oil on canvas religious painting, laid down on panel, depicting a scene on the road to Calvary from the Passion of Christ in which Christ falls for the third time beneath the cross while carrying it to His Crucifixion. He is depicted surrounded by disciples, Roman soldiers (including one on horseback), and observers, painted in an oval. Unsigned. Attributed en verso to Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (Italy, 1727-1805). After a Baroque work by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (Italy, 1696-1770) titled "Christ Carrying the Cross", now in Sant'Alvise Church, Venice. Though this painting departs substantially from the original, the figure of Christ is clearly borrowed from the elder Tiepolo's composition. Furthermore, Domenico included this same figural quotation in his 1772 work now housed in the Museo del Prado, Madrid. This painting may be based on a print after the original Battista Tiepolo painting, as the image is reversed. Housed in a giltwood frame with painted corner decoration. Sight: 10 1/2" H x 7 3/4" W. Framed: 15 1/2" H x 12 1/2" W. Probably late 18th/early 19th century.
CONDITION: Some scattered retouching visible under UV light inspection including to possible tear on guard, center. Largest area of retouch approximately 2" on right side. Craquelure throughout. Frame with wear, patination, gilt loss, and natural wood shrinkage.
