French school oil on canvas seated portrait painting depicting Sophia Herpin de Fremont (1787-1864) attired in a black dress and white shawl, holding a book. Inscribed en verso and translated from French "Sophie Angelique Gabrielle Herpin de Fremont, married in 1801 to F. Olivier (son of Louis Herpin de Fremont…advisor to of the king, private master of the waters of the Contentin)…". Possibly signed by the artist en verso lower right "J. M. Louis". French stencil mark en verso lower center stretcher. Housed in a giltwood frame with a red painted liner. Sight: 15 7/8" H x 12 3/4" W. Framed: 19 1/4" H x 16 1/4" W. Early 19th Century.
PROVENANCE: The Collection of Dr. Joe Newsom Rawlings, Davisboro, Georgia.
CONDITION: Overall good condition with craquelure, inpainting to her dress and face, and overpainted areas of repair in the right-center, and upper right-hand corner, largest area 1 1/2" x 2 1/2". Frame with some cracking, repairs, and loss, largest area 4 1/4".
