Large 18th century English School oil on canvas, manner of Thomas Hudson (British, 1701-1779), three-quarter size portrait of a middle aged gentleman in 18th century military attire, including a scarlet coat, breastplate and powdered wig, his sword near his left hand. A battle scene is visible in the background left, beyond the subject's right hand. Based on the subject's uniform, possibly 50th or 51st Regiment of Foot, active during the Seven Years' War. Unsigned. Molded giltwood Rococo style frame (not original to the painting). 49" x 38" sight, 59" x 47" framed. Provenance: a Memphis, Tennessee estate. CONDITION: 19th century relining, scattered 1/8" or smaller flakes to background, subject's shoulder, and below subject's belt, a few light scratches to the varnish layer. Scattered frame losses (up to 1-1/2") to outermost edge of frame, along top; possible regilding.
