Auguste Delacroix (French, 1809-1868) oil on canvas bucolic landscape painting. Figures in boats glide past a riverbank filled with resting peasants, cows and a dog; a Chateau rises in the distance, under a partly cloudy sky. Signed lower left and dated 1850. Housed in an ornate carved composite and giltwood molded frame. Sight: 20" H x 28" W. Frame: 30" H x 38" W.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Harold E. Breitling Jr., Fayette, Alabama.
CONDITION: Painting: Lined, with scattered craquelure. Overall yellowing to varnish, including some yellow pooled spots in upper right cloud area. Repaired 1"x 1" tear to bottom center edge. UV light reveals significant spots of overpainting along upper and lower edges of painting, and a few scattered inpainted flakes up to 1/2". Frame: Multiple losses to gilding, up to 2" L.
