Oil on panel painting that depicts a peasant woman who holds two buckets, after Jean-Francois Millet (1814-1875) c. 1860 painting “Peasant Girl Returning from a Well.” Unsigned. With Knaffl & Bro., Knoxville, TN framer’s label affixed to back of frame. Verso inscribed “Venice Miller” (likely a former owner of the painting). Housed in a period giltwood frame. Sight: 11 in. H x 8 in. W. Framed: 17 in. H x 14 in. W. Note: Millet’s original painting is in the collection of the Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, MA (Inv. No. 1955.551). Knoxville artist Lloyd Branson (1861-1925) worked in a related style and championed similar rural themes and depictions of agrarian labor. Joseph Knaffl operated in Knoxville under the Knaffl & Brother name during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Branson was also active in the city.
PROVENANCE: Private Knoxville Collection.
CONDITION: Vertical crack runs the length of panel to immediate left of figure, culminating with flake to paint layer along lower edge. Additional fine vertical cracks to left half and upper right, in background, plus minor frame abrasions and surface grime. Otherwise very good condition. Frame with minor abrasions and losses.
