American School, possibly Southern, oil on canvas oval mourning portrait of three young children, each depicted bust length in full or three quarter view, holding a flower, against a cloudy background. Partially legible signature to lower right reads “L. Emile _____,” (possibly Emile Herzinger). Dated 1861, lower right. Original oval molded giltwood and composition frame. Stretcher: 36 in. H x 28 in. W. Frame: 46 in. H x 39 in. W.
PROVENANCE: The collection of Mr. and Mrs. David Allen, Springfield, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Lined. UV light inspection reveals multiple small scattered spots of retouch to faces, chest and flowers, and some scattered areas of retouch to background. Frame with scattered spots of restoration and retouch.
