American 19th c. oil on board portrait of a child, identified en verso as Prescot Holmes Coleman, standing and wearing a blue suit and holding a riding crop. He leans against a red velvet fringed chair before a red velvet drape. Attached en verso is a CDV of the same image by photographer P.T. Sharp, and an written inscription: “Painted by my great grandmother Coleman of my grandfather Prescot Holmes Coleman in 1870s”. Sight: 19 in. H x 15 in. W. Parcel gilt and ebonized frame: 23 in. H x 19 in. W. Note: Prescott Holmes Coleman (1864-1947) was born in Providence, Rhode Island to John Addison Coleman and Ellen Clarissa Holmes Coleman, to whom this painting is attributed. Philip Thomas Sharp was a photographer and lithographer. It is possible that this portrait was made by the subject’s mother from oil paints over a lithograph or larger photographic image.
