American School, 19th-century double-sided portrait. One side depicts a seated woman in circa 1830s black dress with ornate jewelry. Her black hair is pulled tightly back and she holds a gold chain, possibly a rosary chain, in her hand. The other side depicts a seated woman in circa 1850s or early 1860s dress with white collar and cuffs, pink bow at neck and bonnet. Molded later giltwood frame. Sight: 29 in. H x 23 in. W. Frame: 33 in. H x 26 1/2 in. W.

CONDITION:
Side 1: In need of restoration. Canvas has been mounted to the board and exhibits significant delamination, flaking and losses. Side 2: Canvas mounted to board. Repaired square tear lower left corner and repaired tear to lower edge. Craquelure throughout. Repairs to upper right background, lower left sleeve area, and bonnet (refer to UV photos). 1/4 in flake to subject’s forehead.
