Set of twelve (12) Royal Doulton Willow Story pattern polychrome enamel and parcel gilt porcelain cabinet plates, depicting scenes from the Chinese fairy tale the "Willow Pattern Story", in which two lovers Koong Shee (Koong-Se) and Chang run away from her father's palace and find refuge together on a small island. Includes three (3) plates depicting Koong Shee and Chang fleeing from her father; three (3) plates depicting the couple escaping arrest by soldiers; two (2) depicting the couple traveling to the island on a boat; two (2) plates depicting Koong Shee watching Chang culitvate the island; and two (2) plates depicting the two living together on the island; each plate includes the image of two doves representing the couple in top center of the sky, the rims with images of birds and other floral and geometric decorations. All with green Royal Doulton marks, English text describing the scenes, and numerals, nine (9) with purple retailer marks for Jones, McDuffie, and Stratton, Boston to underside of bases. 7/8" H x 10 1/4" dia. Early 20th century.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Pia Stratton, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Very minor losses to polychrome, surface wear largest area 5", otherwise very good condition.
