Continental School, manner of Joseph Karl Stieler (Germany, 1781-1858), oil portrait depicting a woman with dark brown upswept hair and wearing a black off-the-shoulder dress with white lace trim and dark red wrap, her left arm positioned on a support, before a landscape background. Unsigned. Traces of an old paper label, en verso. Housed in an ornately carved rococo giltwood frame. Sight: 11 3/4" H x 9 /4" W. Framed: 17" H x 15" W. Mid 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Pia Stratton, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Painting is executed on a board that is laid down to a canvas auxiliary support. Light craquelure throughout. Examination under UV light reveals minor areas of inpainting around subject's hair.
