Continental school, 19th century, oil on canvas tavern scene in the manner of the seventeenth-century Dutch or Flemish school, especially Adriaen Brouwer and David Teniers the Younger. The painting depicts the darkened interior of a tavern with a central group of card players flanked at right by a couple holding hands and at left by a faintly visible figure exiting through a doorway. The central figure wears a red cap while the man seated across from him is outfitted in a tailcoat and cravat. Inscription on reverse reads "x Coulter A.(?) I." Unsigned. Housed in an ornate antique gilt frame. Sight: 19 1/2" H x 23 1/2" W. Frame: 31" H x 34" W.
CONDITION: Overall good condition, with 1/4" x 1/4" area of surface stabilized and slight retouching to paint, Some gilt loss and cracking of frame, including a loose, repaired piece of ornament in the upper left.
