Four (4) Joseph Wopfner (Austria, 1843-1927) drawings with figures including three (3) pencil and one (1) ink with wash. 1st item: Ink and wash watercolor drawing on paper of a putto or Cupid seen from behind in dense woods. The texture of the trees is described with dappling while the figure–rendered in delicate linework–carves "L. E. / 25" into the trunk of a large tree. Signed lower left. Housed in a molded gilt frame with maroon mat. Sight: 6" H x 4" W. Framed: 13" H x 10 3/4" W. 2nd item: Gestural pencil drawing on blue paper titled "Maher um Chiemsee" (Mowing around the Chiemsee) and depicting six women mowing or cutting grass in a hilly landscape near the Bavarian Sea or Chiemsee. Initialed in lower left and titled in lower right. Housed in a molded gilt frame with maroon mat. Sight: 4" H x 5 1/2" W. Framed. 3rd item: Gestural pencil drawing on blue paper depicting three farm workers tending to a field before a lake. Initialed in lower left. Housed in a molded gilt frame with maroon mat. Sight: 3 3/4" H x 3 3/4" W. Framed: 10 1/2" H x 10 1/2" W. 4th item: Pencil sketch on buff paper of two kneeling, praying figures before a blank background. Unsigned, with artist's estate stamp on backing. Housed in a molded gilt frame with maroon mat. Sight: 6 3/4" H x 6 1/8" W. Framed: 13 5/16" H x 12 15/16" W.
PROVENANCE: The Collection of Ilse Rieden, Gate City, Virginia. Descended in the family from her grandfather, the artist Josef Wopfner, who gifted this work to a relative.
CONDITION: 1st item: Good condition with excellent contrasts. Some mat burn around sight border. 2nd item: Excellent condition. What appears to be an area of beige paint, lower right, is original. 3rd item: Excellent condition. 4th item: Good condition with mat burn around sight border and some foxing or soiling mainly at right, not interfering with image. Not examined outside of frames
