Daniel Sherrin (British, 1868-1942) oil on canvas painting of a Scottish Highlands mountain and river landscape. Cows wade into the river and the glow of a setting or rising sun illuminates the distant, rocky peak–along with the tops of the trees in the middle ground–while fog lingers at the mountain's base. Signed "L. Richards," a well-known pseudonym of the artist, lower right. Housed in an ornate gilt frame. Old labels en verso for Arthur Stuart, St. Albans, and the Stately Galleries. Sight: 15 1/8" H x 23 1/8" W. Framed: 20 3/4" H x 28 3/4" W.
PROVENANCE: Private Illinois Collection.
CONDITION: Overall good condition. Faint stress lines from the stretcher run around the perimeter of the painting one inch inside the frame window. A 3" x 2" area of overpainting surrounding a repaired tear is in lower left quadrant, just above and to the right of the white reflection on the river, with large area of adhesive surrounding repair on reverse. Some gilt loss on frame ornamentation.
