Oil on board maritime painting depicting a steamship with a single mast in the turbulent open sea with the funnel billowing dark smoke into a blue-gray sky and two sea birds in flight. Signed lower right "C. Beckmann". Housed in a molded giltwood frame with carved floral, acanthus, pineapple, and scallop or shell decoration. Handwritten sticker label "B", en verso of frame. Sight: 7" H x 10 3/8" W. Frame: 14 1/2" H x 17 7/8" W. Probably European, late 19th/early 20th century.
PROVENANCE: the Estate of Emilee Barnes Frincke, Knoxville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition with minor surface grime. Frame with scattered craquelure, wood shrinkage, and loss to gilt measuring 1/8" H x 1 3/8" W.
