Francoise Gilot (French, 1921-2023) lithograph in colors on wove paper, “Sunflowers with Fallen Petals,” 1990. A vase filled with sunflowers and flanked by fallen yellow petals stands on a table. An orange border, itself decorated with yellow petals, surrounds the central image. Signed in pencil, lower right. Housed under acrylic in a silvered wood frame with white mat. Sight: 26 1/2 in. H x 21 1/2 in. W. Framed: 40 in. H x 34 1/2 in. W. Biographical Note: “Throughout her lifetime, [Francoise] Gilot has refused a clean classification of her work – instead, light, form and color are arrived at intuitively, with her sensorial experiences instinctively translated through her artistic hand…The artist’s resultant body of work reflects her kaleidoscopic stylistic approach, as she unceasingly probes new ways of image-making. Born in France in 1921, she decided at the age of five to become a painter…While initially gaining access to the upper echelon of the midcentury European art world through her then-partner, artist Pablo Picasso, Gilot trod an original artistic path for herself throughout her eight decades of artistic production.” (Source: Grand Rapids Art Museum)
